Launching the Currach Canvas Print

Henry lived on Achill Island, Co. Mayo, for several years, sensitively recording its inhabitants and terrain. Here, five fishermen drag their boat towards the incoming tide. The work was created shortly after his arrival on Achill, when he focused on the harsh realities of the islanders' existence. The currach was ideally suited to their needs; being made of wickerwork and hide, it was lightweight, capable of negotiating both shallow waters and rough seas, and did not require a harbour.
