van Ruisdael, The Castle at Bentheim Art Print

In c. 1650, Ruisdeal visited the village of Bentheim, in the German province of Westphalia near the border with Holland. He made at least fourteen paintings of the castle, of which this view is the most imposing. He has exaggerated the castle's location: in reality, it is not situated on a prominence. He has also emphasised the power of nature to create what is regarded as one of his masterpieces, painted at the age of twenty-four.
